The Cube

The Cube
March 2009

Three simple orthogonal objects interpenetrate. The interpenetrated space is interesting. This occurred within a cubed domain. I built a frame to help emphasize the edges and corners. Lines from the objects were continued on the faces of the cube. Wood and sanded acetate were placed on the faces and objects to create solid, semi-solid, and void planes. Once the objects and faces were defined, I expanded and extended elements of and from the cube. The space between the interpenetrated objects radiates through from the cube and rotates around and lands at the edge of the model. A solid plane that is parallel to the interpenetrated space gradates from the cube on the upper level of the model.

Private Library

Private Library
May 2008

A small, private library was the goal here. The entrance can be found near the center. The space is very open with floor to ceiling shelving attached to the walls; they can hold at least 500 books. There is a fireplace, desk, and other furniture on the right side of the structure, the exposed side, with lots of natural light penetrating the space. The left is subdued, raised by a small staircase and pulled away from the books. This small space gives room for a bed or futon, armoire, bathroom. This side's natural light comes mainly from narrower windows and clerestories. The model posted here is the left, private section of the structure.

Tooling: Weaving

Tooling: Weaving
September 2007

Choose a design term, such as weaving, bending, or spiraling. Through a series of drawings and models, illustrate this term.

I started with images of weaving from different sources: hair weaves, woven fabrics, baskets, and the leaves of a tree overlapping. I chose to work with the image of the basket. I expanded lines and negative space from the original image. I next constructed a model of a section of the drawing. We had to draw a representation of that model and build another model from that drawing, and the process continued.
